Leland Bell is an artist, musician, and educator from Wikwemikong Unceded Territory. While developing a collection for his first solo exhibition at the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, Leland was inspired by his research on the Wiigwaasabak, or sacred birch bark scrolls. Leland asked me to help him interview and record Elders, knowledge keepers, artists, and academics to include as a part of this collection. “Giigdowin” (2023) features Leland Bell, Dan Commanda, Marie Eshkibok-Trudeau, the late Willie Trudeau, Lawrence Martin, Stanley Peltier, Mikinaak Migwans, Alan Corbiere, and Nicholas Deleary. Interviews take place in English and in Anishinaabemowin.
